Quick Navigation

What is KITAS?

Foreign nationals can legally work or stay in Indonesia for up to 12 months with a KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) work permit. It's also frequently referred to as a limited stay permit, work permit, or work visa.

What are the type of KITAS?

Working permit KITAS, or a work permit for workers

An investor KITAS

A dependent visa KITAS for spouses and children, and

A retirement visa KITAS for retirees

How to obtain KITAS?

You will require sponsorship from a business or organization with an Indonesian registration in order to obtain a working KITAS. These companies can include:

An Indonesian-owned company
(PT PMDN)

A foreign-owned company
(PT PMA)

A representative office

A foundation

You must first acquire a VITAS (Visa Izin Tinggal Terbatas), followed by an ITAS (Izin Tinggal Terbatas), and finally your working visa, the KITAS.

How long does a work permit remain valid?

In Indonesia, a single period of KITAS or a work permit is valid for six to twelve months.

Your KITAS may be extended once every 12 months for a maximum of five additional years. Additionally, the duration of your permission will be determined by your position within your business, specifically:

A 12-month KITAS will be granted to directors, commissioners, and individuals listed in the company's incorporation paperwork.

Manager-level employees and lower employees often have a six-month KITAS. However, if they can provide the necessary documentation or have more than five years of relevant work experience, managers can also receive up to twelve months.

How can a work permit be obtained?

1.

Apply to the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board for a Limited Stay Visa (VITAS or Telex visa) and a Limited Stay Permit (ITAS).

2.

Obtain a letter from the Ministry of Labor granting you a work permit.

3.

Obtain regulatory permission for your Expatriate Placement Plan (RPTKA), which enables your business to recruit foreign workers.

4.

Convert your VITAS into a KITAS upon your arrival in Indonesia with Multiple Exit Re-Permit (MERP)

5.

Get a Police Report Letter (STM) from the local police department.

6.

Get a Certificate of Registration for Temporary Resident by registering with the population office of the nearby municipality (SKPPS).

7.

Send a report on expatriate remittances to the ministry of labor.

Do tourists need to obtain a KITAS?

No, a work permit is not typically required for tourists. The Indonesian government provides both a visa on arrival and a free 30-day tourist visa for the majority of nations. A KITAS is only required for foreign nationals who intend to work in Indonesia for a prolonged period of time.

What if I only require meetings or short-term work?

You don't require a KITAS if you only intend to conduct a few meetings or short-term business in Indonesia. Rather, obtaining a business visa would be your best course of action.

In comparison to a KITAS, a business visa has simpler requirements. You are only permitted to stay for a maximum of 60 days each visit, with the opportunity to extend. Furthermore, it prevents you from earning a consistent income in Indonesia.

There are two main types of business visas accessible to employees:

Single entrance permits only one admission into Indonesia, while Several entry permits multiple entries into Indonesia over the course of up to a year.

e-KITAS: Electronic visa application

Through the new Online Single Submission (OSS) system launched by the Indonesian government in 2019, e-KITAS applications are currently urged to be submitted online by 2021.

Make sure you have the necessary paperwork before submitting them online to avoid any hassles. Online applications typically take 5 to 7 days to process, after which you or your sponsor will receive the e-KITAS by email.
